| Police question family and neighbours of missing boy
The central government representative for the Canary Islands, José Segura, has confirmed that police are investigating the family and neighbours of the young boy who disappeared from Vecindario on Saturday, Yeremi Vargas. Friends and teachers are also included. The seven year old was last seen when he was playing in the street with cousins, and despite the efforts of a large search operation, there has been no trace of him since then. The Army joined in the search on Wednesday, bringing numbers up to 400: they are combing every part of the immediate area where Yeremi was last seen. Specialist police units have been called in from the mainland to help in the investigation. Segura said security controls were immediately implemented at the island's airports, meaning, he said, that Yeremi is still on Gran Canaria.
A third of all babies in Malaga, Almeria and Cadiz are born out of ...
What was once considered an embarrassment or even a disgrace has become a common situation that is generally accepted by society. In fact in todays Spain more than 26 per cent of births are to unmarried mothers and the figure is rising. In 1975, the year of the death of Franco, only two per cent of babies were born out of wedlock while ten years ago the proportion was just 12 per cent. This 26.6 per cent in Spain is still low in comparison with other European countries. In Estonia and Sweden, for example, more than 55% of births are to unmarried mothers (according to 2004 statistics), and the figure for the UK is 42.3%, Austria 35.9%, Ireland 32.3%, Portugal 29.1% and Germany 27.9%, the only countries below Spain in the ranking being Slovakia, Malta, Poland, Italy, Greece and Cyprus.
How pilot put the brakes on hijacker
A quick-thinking pilot foiled a hijacking when he slammed on the brakes while landing in the Canary Islands, sending the gunman flying to the floor and allowing passengers to overpower him. The pilot of the Boeing 737 from Air Mauritania realised that the lone hijacker knew no French — and used this language to brief the passengers and crew of his plan. A Mauritanian man armed with two pistols hijacked the aircraft carrying 71 passengers and eight crew, shortly after it took off from Mauritania's capital, Nouakchott, bound for Gran Canaria on Thursday. .
European Cruises Offer Great Value With Current Exchange Rate
With the fluctuating exchange rate of the Euro, Americans looking to get the most for their money while traveling in Europe might well appreciate the value of cruises. With only minimal shoreside expenses such as souvenirs, many consumers may find that planning a cruise is both a money-saver and a stress-reducer. A recent comparison of a 10-day land tour versus a cruise vacation revealed that a family of four could save up to 45 percent by booking a 10-day Mediterranean cruise over a 10-day deluxe escorted land vacation. The evaluation included typical expenses such as accommodations, transportation between cities in Europe, food, entertainment and tours. Estimated costs for a family of four totaled $11,359 for the 10-day cruise vacation and $20,728 for the deluxe escorted Europe land vacation.
